Yesterday was long but generally wonderful. We finally made it to Ljubljana and despite struggling all day to stay awake we enjoyed our first day and survived until bed time
This is our plane in Paris. In this airport terminal everybody got to walk onto the tarmac and onto the plane (Like I said terminal 2G is the middle of nowhere CDG)
Our view getting off the plane in Slovenia. The picture doesn't do the view justice. Our view was full of mountains and pine trees with some cool looking old church spires thrown in
Within 5 min we were out with our luggage. No passport check or anything (flights only come in from other EU countries). We ate at the tiny airport restaurant as we had an hour wait for our shuttle. This is my tuna, cream and corn sandwich. Tasted fine to me, but that might be because I was starving. Either way it was cheap! Only 10 euro for both our lunches in the airport!
Dinky and Zach on the transfer to our hotel. Zach was really struggling to stay awake at this point.
Latte at the little cafe that is attached to Atticus B &B (http://www.atticus.si/). We got there and they had accidently cancelled our room so we got upgraded to the suite apartment. This meant about an hour wait for it to be clean, but the lady took pity on us and gave us lattes to sip while we checked things on the computer during our wait.
Our room. Pretty small and very Ikea, but nice and has everything we need. It is actually a studio appartment on the 3rd floor of an appartment building near the main part of the hotel
First sights walking around old town to our bike tour (http://www.ljubljanabybike.com/#!city-tour/c1iye)
Reconstructed fountain, river and castle as viewed on the bike tour
Strange art installation right above the river
This is only 2 blocks from the river. The city has forced these houses to remain as they were like 500 years ago including the food production gardens in back. Now they can be yours for 500000 euros.
Old roman wall that rings a park and school area
This area used to be the Yugoslavian army barracks. When that government collapsed it was supposed to be torn down, but the artists/hippies moved in and started turning it into an art area. Now the government basically lets them stay and party here as they make all sorts of strange art on the buildings
Trivoli park
Pariament building covered in naked statues of everyday Slovenians including a lumberjack with a chain saw
Practicing for the big statehood day celebration later that night. The orchestra seemed pretty good, but way over miked.
Church and muse statue viewed from the triple bridge.
Us on the triple bridge
The dragon bridge statue got dinky!
Zach's rabbit dinner at Spajza restaurant http://www.spajza-restaurant.si/en/. We also had a good organic Slovenian wine here but I can't remember the wine. Our first choice in dinner was actually closed for the holiday, but this place was pretty good. We unfortunatly were seated next to the most unlikable Americans ever. They were super rude and their conversations centered on how the guy won't eat anything basically (unless it was a piece of cow) and the lady went on and on about how her daughter really should not have broken up with her boyfriend because they were both rich skinny and good looking yikes!
We took the public bike share bikes to the brewery. Not the best bikes but a 1 euro a week or 3 euros a year subscription the price couldn't be beat!
The old union brewery has recently opened a restaurant and tap room with a wider selection of beers than just lagers so of course we had to try it
Dinky found the bar and has a Bok and Strong Ale in hand. The beer was good but not great. Certainly beats the weak lagers we expected to find on our trip.
View of the castle walking back to the hotel.
By the time we got back to the hotel be barely managed to set an alarm before heading to bed. Tomorrow is a full day exploring Ljubljana and then we drive to Bled!
