Day 4 Baku waterfront, mud volcanos and ancient paintings

Day 4 of our trip included a morning walking the waterfront in Baku, and an afternoon trip south to the mud volcanos and ancient paintings.  It was another great day...only issue is getting Lincoln to sleep at night, but at least we had some longer car rides today so everybody could take a short nap.

The morning started with more cinnabun, coffee and oj at Kate's apartment

Then we took a taxi to near the waterfront but stopped at Gloria Jeans for some coffee.  Surprisingly these are more plentiful than starbucks here.

We think they are trying to make Baku more stroller and handicap friendly, but honestly these "ramps" are not the most userfriendly solution.  We used this one to go under the highway and get to the actual waterfront

On the water you can see all the new building projects going on around Baku harbor (this is part of the Caspian sea)

Us with the flame towers

Flame tower with the fake venice that they built along the water.  The boats weren't out yet, but Kate said you can ride around in them like Venice.  It was put up for the 2015 European games

The carpet museum is actually shaped like a carpet.  We didn't go in because we didn't have time.

Next we walked back to Maiden Tower near old town.

Lincoln was facinated by the kittens hanging out with us in the shade.  One of them kept trying to curl up with him while he got his diaper changed.

Original plan was to backpack Lincoln and walk up the tower.  He was not having it so Kate stayed back to play with him

First set of steps up.  This tower was somewhat short for us at only 8 stories tall

Small restored part of old town on the way back

We stopped here to grab some food for lunch

 Lincoln enjoyed his sandwich

Lincoln then got his hand stuck in the water jug after he pulled the lid off.  Luckily he wasn't that stuck

Next adventure was a drive to the south along the coast to see the mud volcanos and Gubostan to see the ancient paintings.  The road to the mud volcanos was nuts.  Like I have no idea how it even counted as 4 by 4 road let alone one that had regular cars driving on it.  Here is one section where the oil is just seeping out of the ground right next to the "road"

Mud volcano!  There were maybe 20 of these guys in varying stages of eruption.

Overall it was a very dry hot place

Next stop gubostan for the paintings

Just some of the many paintings we saw.  You can actually get so close you can almost touch it.

We stopped for a little ice cream which Lincoln really enjoyed

On the way out we stopped at the museum about the paintings.  Lincoln most liked the light up animals

Finally made it back to Baku for an earlyish dinner.  We had new york style pizza delivered so we could all get some needed sleep

Tomorrow we go on a tour to Quba and the mountains!
