Day 10 was our first day in Sweden. We started off by coming in through the Stockholm archipelago on our cruise from Finland. Then after a poor decision to try the metro instead of just taking a taxi to pick up our car we were off to Visby on Gotland island
Lincoln enjoyed the hot dogs for breakfast. Family breakfast was in the playroom so you could let the kids play and enjoy your coffee.
Lincoln once again enjoyed the ball area
I went on deck to watch the island scenary
Lincoln later joined me with Dinky
There is all our stuff at the metro stop once we got there. We didn't take a taxi to the train station for our car because it said it was only a 10 min walk. While it was more than 10 minutes, plus my suitcase got a lot of gum stuck in one wheel so it broke. Then we were dragging luggage through the metro. Not fun, but at least we got a workout. Also I found new luggage that shipped to our hotel in Stockholm for free
The metro was nice although we took up 2 entire seat areas
We stopped at the starbucks in the main train station quickly to get caffeine and money from the atm
Then we found the hertz rental car place and we were off in our smalish volvo
We caught just a glimpse of Stockholm as we drove out
And then 40 min later we were boarding our car ferry to Visby
It was a very crowded ship but we eventually got lunch of fish and chips plus a few other random things
Then we went up to the sun deck to walk Lincoln around until he feel asleep. Zach and Lincoln took short naps
First glimpse of Visby. It has one of the best preserved medieval walls in Europe.
This is what the car area looked like while we were getting off the ship
Gotland is known for its windmills and we spotted one as we came into town
After finding parking we went into the town walls to find our apartment
Here is our apartment. The email with arrival instructions got lost so it took quite a while but we eventually got in
Nice apartment with plenty of room
After getting our stuff in we walked around the entire town wall before dinner. Here is one of the first towers we found
There were these rams everywhere
The streets we so lovely with all the roses and other flowers set against the old houses and the wall
First from one tower you could partially climb
Inside a tower
View from another tower looking back up at the church and the old church ruins
Nice walkway between the wall and the sea
Then we walked through part of town and looked at cool old buildings like this one.
Park with a model of the castle that used to be here
We decided to splurge and go have a farm dinner out the country. It was all food from Gotland and focused on vegetables.
We got the 3 course meal and 1 wine pairing to share
First course was beets and pickled beets (after a few snacks to start)
Then beef with carrots and peas
Then strawberries with dill and cream
View of the greenhouse/restaurant at sunset
Farm store
Not the best picture but the sunset was lovely
Then a quick drive back into Visby, parked our car just outside the walls and quickly to bed for everyone.
Tomorrow we explore Gotland by car and bike
