Day 6 was a travel day. It was a chance to see a lot of different parts of Finland all in the same day. We started at the Arctic Circle and ended in Savonlinna in the lakes area.
We got up in time for breakfast this time. Lincoln ate lots of hot dogs
I enjoyed the fruit, yogurt and granola
Next stop was the playground for Zach and Lincoln while I looked for a few more souvenirs
Lincoln loved this playground!
One more stop at the Arctic circle line so we could get a good pictures
Family at the artic circle!
The airport was all of 5 min away. We had to stop for gas and were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. A kid who spoke perfect english came, asked what we wanted and did it.
All our stuff at the airport. We made it through no questions asked on any of our bags, but to be fair the airport is tiny.
We were on the flight 30 min before take off and we were in the air 10 min before our scheduled departure time. Talk about efficient!
Last view of Lapland
We landed 25 min early in Helsinki so we had time to stop at the grocery store in the airport for lunch and starbucks for coffee. It was nice to find some reasonably healthy food!
It was a little bit of a walk but we found the sixt rental place. All went smoothly and then we were on the road
First stop was Porvoo which is one of the older towns in Finland on the coast about 40 min from the Helsinki airport. It has lots of cute little shops along the river and a nice walking area
View from on of the squares
The main church bell tower at the top of the hill
The church
Inside the church was also very pretty
Then we walked back to the car (after a brief detour to find a bathroom, which was harder than it should have been because of Midsummer)
And on the road again. The scenary looked a lot like northern Minnesota. We went what was supposed to be the slightly longer route so we could see Russia. That was a mistake. What was supposed to be only 30 extra min turned into 100 extra minutes thanks to construction
Very strange park near the Russian boarder. It was just a forest full of these strange statues
And then it totally wasn't worth it. Russia is right on the other side of this bridge but the view is blocked by the railroad bridge.
Finally we got into Savonlinna at 8:30 pm. Here is the castle on the way in
Our apartment was nice and huge! Although oddly we never found a garbage can in the entire place
Lincoln enjoyed our porch
We tried to have a quick pizza but that was closed for Midsummer. So we ended up as the Hesburger. It is the Finnish McDonalds and of similar quality. It was food at least
These things are all over the place
View of Savonlinna on the way back
Lincoln went straight to bed so we got to enjoy the end of sunset on our porch
So Day 6 was lots of time in the car, but still a pretty good day with lots of good scenery. Tomorrow we explore the lake area!
